Showers / Evaporation Pond

The Exhibition Shower

Camp Stella has been using this design since 2004.  The structure is an oversized sawhorse that has a few added braces to provide extra support.  There are two hooks on the top beam for solar shower bags.

The showerer stands on a plastic base (a giant shelf) which sits on a simple brace to allow the water to freely flow into the evaporation pond below.

It's an exceedingly simple design that is easy to set up, tear down, and collapses to a compact space saving set of 2" X 4"s.

The Pyramid with Privacy Curtain

For those of you that have some dignitude, you'll be happy to know that Camp Stella veteran, Bill, is loaning us the Stellar favorite, Pyramid Shower. It  features a beautiful hand painted canvas curtain for wind protection and privacy.  Bill's shower is much more attractive and elegant than the vulgar Tandem Exhibition Shower.  Bill is a structural engineer and this is his design.  It's also easy to set up, tear down and folds nicely into a compact space saving configuration when not in use.  The showerer will walk across a small bridge to get to the generous shower platform (just like the one from the TanEx shower). Bill's shower has it's own free standing evaporation pond.

The Evap Pond

In 2006, we preassembled the Super Expando Evaporation Pond.  We drilled holes in the sidewalls much like the wholes in a belt.  The pond can expand from 8’X16’ to 8’X24’.  By using wing nuts and bolts, we are reducing the effort it will take to set up and tear down.  This design will require fewer nails which are more time consuming to remove.  A black tarp will line the floor of the pond.

Please do not dump "clean" water into the pond (ie: melted ice water from your cooler).  Also, throughout the week, grab a broom and help us spread the water around.  When it pools up in one area, it does not evaporate as quickly.

This is where you spit when you're brushing your teeth.  This is where you drain that can of Tuna fish.  It's where you wash your dishes.  This water is nasty.  You won't want to step barefoot into it.

Shade Structures

The Meeting Tent

Much to our surprise, one 10' X 20' tent wasn't big enough for our daily meetings in 2005.  In 2006, we added another.  They are identical and we set them up side by side.

We place each tent pole over a rebar stake to increase stability.

They nylon roof and walls are secured with "elastic ball straps" (pictured).

Each tent takes under an hour to set up.

We'll be using the Banner that Bill made in 2005 for the front of the tent.  Carpet remnants that we've collected over the years will line the floor.

The Family Tent

Thanks once again to 2005 Stella vet, Jayne, we will be able to enjoy our beloved "Family Tent."  Located between the meeting tents and "The Mallard" (Diesel Daddy Dave's RV), we will erect a 10' X 20' shade structure for general use among Stellar Campers. This is where our DIY Communal Kitchen will be located. The roof is a reflective silver for maximum shade and the walls are made of colorful fabric that allow the breeze to waft in, keep much of the sun out, and still allow for an open and airy view of our camp.  The floor will be lined with carpet remnants the we have collected over the years.

Lighting

Blue Solar LED Light Strands104 Blue String Lights

In 2005 & 2006, Avalon spent nearly $1,600.00 on solar powered, blue LED strand lights.  Traditionally, each public structure on the Avalon Plaza was outlined with the sparkly blue lights. The lights will go on automatically at dusk each night and will stay on until sunrise.

Camp Stella has purchased 2 of these strands to decorate the inside of our shade structures.  We have one in our possession and hope that the other one may have been inadvertently packed with the other Avalon lights.

Camp Stella Path Lights

Over the years, we have collected several solar powered path lights that will be strategically placed within the Camp Stella camping area.  These lights will go on automatically at dusk and will stay on until dawn.

Avalon Village also owns a number of Solar Powered path lights that may be used to illuminate obstacles and pathways.

Chinese Lanterns

In 2006, we purchased 10 very expensive LED battery powered Chinese lanterns.  9 remain.  The lights will need to be turned off before we all go to bed.  If we can remember to do this, the $10.00 batteries should last us all week long, and possibly one more year.
